Liquid Edition Pro Breakout Box Drivers For Mac
Posted by: adrianr I've been away for a couple of weeks, so apologies if this is already posted and I missed it. Here's a new review of the, but most interesting is the section 2/3rds of the way down showing a very sensibly small, and hopefully cheap, prototype new product:- Just curious, how much do you think such box should be worth - given the prices you see on other eGPU solutions? EDIT: Forgot to add the Eve forum URL! In my view there is a lot of price gouging in this market right now, although I'm sure there's been a lot of money spent by some parties (but mostly Intel) in refining drivers and developing the interface hardware and protocols over the last years, but there's really no justification for charging more for a small case, PCIe/TB interface and PSU than can be paid for a budget all-in-one or barebones PC - the current products are mostly a box full of air and little else - the PCIe board must be cheaper than a far more complex and useful ITX mobo.
If the market is to boom and remain viable as laptop GPUs continue to develop, then eGPU prices need to be lower. Right now I think the true target audience of the vendors has been the 'creatives' market, not most of us here, although that is clearly changing this year with the new products from HP, Aorus etc.
In this case, it's small and with relatively low power requirements. A quick search shows that an RX 560 card retails for around EUR 110, and I assume that bulk purchase of the MXM cards will be significantly lower in price.
For it to really have a mass-market future I'd hope for an upper limit of EUR 250 retail for this little and low-performance ultra-portable box to be a success. A little off-topic but this thread over on the EVE forum indicates that a bare board DIY eGPU solution (which is what I really need myself) should be priced below $150 to meet buyer expectations, and again in comparison with ITX boards, it should be sub-$100. If one would engineer directly the gpu along usb 3.1 20Gb/s controller you could get a cheap eGPU solution, accessible and compatible with everything, that do not cost much more than the gpu itself.
An external psu like the laptop one is ok, since these kind of psu reach more than 200Watt. Quite fine with med/high range gpu. It always depend with who you speak. If with me, i would say, there is no difficulty on unleash eGPU capabilities to the mass.
