Click to expand. They won't be terribly fast by today's standards. The 6100 is a 60MHz PowerPC 601. The 6200 is either a 75MHz PPC 603 or a 100MHz 603e. You should, however, be able to run most apps that are compatible with the version of the system software you have installed.
I recommend you max out the RAM. You may want to install a bigger hard drive as well (although SCSI drives for the 6100 may be hard to find at a reasonable price.) Assuming that you have enough RAM, you should be able to run a great many useful apps. I would expect its biggest speed problems to be in terms of web surfing (I don't expect good Java performance) and in compute-intensive apps like Photoshop. For basic stuff like e-mail and office productivity apps, I wouldn't expect much of a problem. In terms of expansion possibilities: The 6100 has: - 8M RAM on the motherboard.
2 72 pin SIMM sockets for expansion up to 136M (80ns RAM. The two sockets should be a matched pair) - Video is an HDI-45 connector. You'll need an adaptor to attach a monitor with a standard VGA connector. 1 NuBus slot - SCSI hard drive. External DB-25 SCSI port - Built-in 10M Ethernet (via AAUI port - you'll need a tranceiver) - ADB port (for keyboard, mouse, etc.) - 2 serial ports The 6200 has: - 2 72 pin SIMM sockets for expansion up to 64M total (80ns RAM) - Video is a DB-15 connector.
You'll need adaptor to attach a monitor with a standard VGA connector. 1 LC-type slot (may have somthing in it) - 1 comm slot (may have a modem in it) - 1 TV tuner slot (may have a TV tuner card in it) - 1 video I/O slot (may have an A/V card in it) - ATA-type hard drive - External DB-25 SCSI port - ADB port (for keyboard, mouse, etc.) - 2 serial ports - David. Click to expand. It depends on if you need additional computers. In case you do, I probably would put a small and fast Linux distribution on it and connect them to a network. Then I would set them up to run as dumb terminal, logging into another Linux/Un.x machine via X.
All processing will be done on the fast machine, the dumb clients only have to take care about the graphical output. I did this with a 133 MHz Pentium on a 100 mbit network and it has worked fine. The alternative is to run them as individual computers, but you probably do not want this because they are too slow nowadays. Another alternative is to put them in your locker, wait some years (200?) for them to increase its value. Then you can sell them to a museum. (In fact, I still do have my Atari STe and I am sorry about that I have sold my first computer, a Sinclair ZX81 with 1 kb RAM, later with an extension to 16 kb RAM. Does someone still have such a machine to give away?) Claus.
Click to expand.I got a Performa 5200CD even for free from the garbage, this summer! My fanpage about Performa 5200CD, a quiet similar modell THis page WILL grow and will show how to use the hardware with freely downloadable legal software!!!
By now, I am checking how to modify the bootdisks to boot by floppy and access ISO9600 CDROMs ( which can easily be edited and recorded on 'any' Windows/Linux computer). You need a full-blown Windows PC as companion with CD recorder, anyhow, and try to get an extra Ethernet network card for the Apple, as this is mandatory for serious use ( in a network, of course ). So the Performa 5200 and 6200 are good for - network terminal ( if upgraded with an Ethernet card ) - Linux plsybox Sincerely ROlf. Click to expand. I had a bit of a mac 'graveyard' here at work for many years and it always irritated me that I had - in that collection - some of the coolest hardware of its time, past its prime, doing nothing. And so my quest began to at least employ some of them. Depending on your requirements, you could do similar: My Primary DNS server is a Quadra 650, running nonSequitor (free) for DNS and EIMS 1.2.1 (also free) for sending me SMSes about my network.
It also monitors all other servers therefore and tells me when they fail. And using that screw in the back, it serves as a remote restart device for my webserver using QuidProQuo and Applescript. Very Utilitarian! A IIsi sits next to it, doing pretty much the same for my Cisco router. Then, the 7250 120 AWGS is a rock-solid firewall with IPNetRouter. All three machines hum away and seldom require attention, although of late the Quadra has been acting up.

None of these three compare to my pride and joy - Classic II, on which I am trying to run an early ver of MAME and Space Invaders or Asteroids. Its the center-piece of my bar and I hope to find an ADB joystick for it one day.
Click to expand.I did have a 6100 at one point. As long as it has L2 cache (it was optional on the 60MHz model, standard on the 66) it makes a fairly good MP3 jukebox (typically leaving the CPU over 75% free for anything else you might wish to do).

It's even roughly the right form factor for a stereo component. If it doesn't have any external cache and you intend to keep the machine, buy some. The impact is tremendous.

As others have said, it might make a decent machine for some kinds of network services. I wouldn't use it as a file server in 2003, but many other tasks should be fine. Greg- For ADB joysticks you can use the Advanced Gravis Mousestick II. It's small and works well and is cheaply available on e-bay.
It's probably the most appropriate for the Classic. Gravis also makes a Gamepad, not actually a joystick but small and works well. A step up would be the Gravis Firebird or Firebird II. It has a hat switch throttle and is more precise than the Mousestick. Even better, the CH Flightstick Pro or Thrustmaster FCS Mark I.
These are high end joysticks and are fantastic. I've owned and used them all at one time or another.
